The IRLA Welcomes the International Coalition of Parliamentarians for Religious Freedom

The launch of an International Coalition of Parliamentarians to protect religious freedom and to combat persecution is a good initiative.  The presence of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Dr. Heiner Bielfeldt, and the role played by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) gave credibility to such an initiative.

“The fact that the meeting was concluded by the participants signing a Charter for the Freedom of Religion and Belief is a positive sign,” said John Graz, IRLA Secretary General.  “The IRLA and its partner NGOs, active in many countries in the world, will know the Parliamentarians with whom they can cooperate.”

He added, “The support of Parliamentarians is very important to bring the issue of religious freedom and persecution to the attention of world governments.”
