IRLA Secretary General Plans Symposium in Mongolia On Friday, May 25, 2007, International Religious Liberty Association Secretary General, Dr. John Graz, visited Mongolia to prepare for an IRLA symposium. He was warmly welcomed by Sairaan Kader, MP, Member of the Council on Religious Affairs and Samdan Tsedendamba, Secretary, Council on Religious Affairs under the President of Mongolia. Mr. Kader suggested late August or September as optimal times to hold the symposium. He also said he personally supported the idea of holding a symposium in Mongolia. "Since Mongolia has a long history of religious freedom going back more than 800 years, it is appropriate to hold such a meeting here", he said. Mr. Tsedendamba said, "I am happy to meet people who represent the right of all people. Most of the time I meet people who represent the rights of just one group." He too gave his personal support to this symposium. "The world is becoming more complex. In times past in one community, one religion was represented. Today in one community many religions are present." Dr. Graz reminded those present. Mr. Tsdendamba said, "Yes, this is a new phenomenon that members of the same ethnic group will have different religions within their group." In talking about the
need for religious freedom for all people Dr. Graz lamented that, "in
the past one religion was against another religion. Today we find people
of the same religion fighting each other." Dr. Graz was accompanied by Glenn Mitchell, NSD IRLA director, Paul Kotanko, Mongolia Mission Field(MMF) director, Elbert Kuhn, Ministerial Secretary MMF and Monk Jurgal. Monk's wife Nara, ADRA Mongolia Assistant Director, arranged these meetings. She could not be present as she was assisting a group of Australian optometrists in Bayan Oligii, in the far west of Mongolia. [Glenn Mitchell/IRLA News]
Georgian Human Rights Expert Consults IRLA Leaders Silver Spring, Maryland As part of a research visit to the United States, Khatuna Tsintsadze, a human rights expert from the republic of Georgia, visited the International Religious Liberty offices on May 1 to consult with IRLA leaders. Tsintsadze is the executive director of the human rights organisation, the Union "Century 21", based in Tbilisi, Georgia. Currently she is based in New York as an international guest at the International Center of Tolerance Education (ICTE), an initiative of the Third Millennium Foundation. At the same time, she is a visiting scholar at Columbia University. "We were delighted
to host this visit for Ms. Tsintsadze and to provide the opportunity to
develop dialogue with someone who is very well
placed in the human rights community in Georgia," said Jonathan Gallagher,
deputy secretary general of the IRLA who hosted the meeting. "We
have much to discuss in this area of church-state relations, freedom of
conscience, and religious liberty, and we believe this interaction will
provide much mutual benefit." [IRLA News]
